Christmas card proof

Christmas card proof

Here is a proof of the Christmas card. For the actual card I will probably go to Kinko’s and copy this image onto some kind of colored card stock. Then Ill likely print a small edition to sell as I have done in the past.

God’s head was sketched from a web photo of an ancient sculpture of Zeus. The whole beard-and-white-robe visual of God seems to come from these old Zeus depictions. I like the idea of a giant physical Zeus-like God floating around in space. I was attempting to model the forms in the face with directional cuts rather than my usual line/shape woodcut approach. I’d like to explore that technique more.
This was my first attempt at using text in a woodcut. Next time Ill print some out and transfer it to the block in the drawing phase. I’d like to persue that soon as well.

Carving continues and injury

Basswood carving state 6

I learned that these tools cut real people as effortlessly as they cut wooden people. I punctured my palm with the big C gouge. Messy and painful, but that’s alright. I guess that’s what they call learning the hard way.

Another fight

The big boxer is supposed to be Nicolai Valuev. I’m inspired by his sloping forehead and 7 foot frame. I think he should grow a big bushy beard.
